BMI Calculator

Use our BMI Calculator to observe if you are underweight, overweight, or healthy.

Maintaining a healthy weight can be difficult, but the rewards are many.

What is BMI?

BMI is body mass index. This value compares a person's weight with his or her height.

BMI is sometimes used to determine a person's total body fat and whether they are healthy.

Excess body fat has been linked to an increased risk of certain conditions such as heart disease and cancer.

Calculating your BMI is a way to check if you are healthy. Enter in your weight (pounds) and height (feet inches) below, and your BMI will be calculated for you. We use this tool to identify people who need more support or weight control.

What is the meaning of your BMI?

Normal weight = 18.5–24.9

This indicates that you have a healthy body weight that is good for your overall health. Keep up the good work!

Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

This indicates that you may be obese. Obesity has been linked to a number of health problems, including an increased risk of heart disease. If you are concerned about your weight, talk to your doctor, nurse, or dietitian about your results.

Overweight = 25–29.9

It indicates that you may be overweight. Being overweight is associated with many health problems, including an increased risk of heart disease. If you are concerned about your weight, discuss your results with your doctor, nurse, or dietitian.

Underweight = <18.5

This result means that you may be underweight. Low weight can be associated with several health problems. If you are concerned about your weight, we recommend that you discuss the results with your family doctor, nurse, or dietitian.

How reliable is BMI?

Although BMI is not ideal, it is often considered the most useful- and appropriate measure for adults (18 years and older). However, there are some limitations. Consider the following example:

  1. In adults with weaker body tissue than usual, this is a less accurate indicator of obesity (muscle mass). It is because muscle weighs more than fat, and BMI doesn't take that into account.
  2. In smaller ethnic groups, it is a less accurate indicator of obesity (for example: Asian ethnic groups). In addition to BMI, measuring your waist circumference can help you determine if you are overweight and at risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
  3. The BMI calculator on this page is for adults only and should not be used by young people. If you are under 18, talk to your doctor about a healthy weight.
  4. BMI is also affected during pregnancy, but a woman needs to gain weight for a healthy baby. If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor or midwife about how- to weight loss safely during pregnancy.

Why does waist size matter?

It's a good idea to measure your waistline to make sure you don't have too much fat around your belly, which can increase your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke.

You may have a healthy BMI, but you still have excess belly fat, which puts you at risk for certain diseases.

  • The bottom of your ribcage and the top of your hips are the places to look.
  • Wrap a tape measure around your waist halfway between these points to get an accurate measurement.
  • Before taking the measurement, take a deep breath and let it out normally.

If you have an oversized waist, regardless of height or BMI, you should try to lose weight.

A waist size of 37 inches or more is oversized in men.

A waist size of 31.5 inches or more is oversized in women.

Even larger waist sizes could mean greater risk of other health complications, you should see a doctor if you have:

A waist size of 40 inches or more in men.

A waist size of 34 inches or more in women.
